Segun Akinola

Segun Akinola is a composer for film and television who has strengthened many projects with his musical acumen. He is most known for his music in series 11, 12 & 13 of ‘Doctor Who’, starring the first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. Segun’s work was a key immersive tool for showrunner Chris Chibnall and series directors to establish the many adventures the Doctor and her friends travel on. This included the impressive 80s influenced electronic score for ‘The Tsuranga Conundrum’ and the heart-wrenching ‘Demons of the Punjab’ which utilised specialist Indian musicians and orchestra, all recorded at Abbey Road Studios. 

Segun’s most recent projects include the BBC Nature documentary series ‘Kingdom’ narrated by Sir David Attenborough, for which Segun combined orchestral recordings with traditional and contemporary Zambian music, the Simon Verhoeven directed feature film ‘Ach, Diese Lücke, Diese Entsetzliche Lücke (Oh, This Unspeakable Void)’, and ‘Origin: The Story of the Basketball Africa League’.

Further work includes the horror/thriller film ‘The Bayou’, ‘Alter Weißer Mann’, Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder Is Easy’ for the BBC, ‘Girl You Know It’s True’, ‘9/11 Inside the President’s War Room’, ITV drama ‘Stephen’ and ‘The Lost Sons’ directed by Ursula Macfarlane. Segun scored Sundance 2019 favourite ‘The Last Tree’. This was Segun’s second feature film collaboration with director Shola Amoo after ‘A Moving Image’, and it earned him a Discovery of the Year award nomination at the World Soundtrack Awards.

A BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, Segun’s other work includes scoring BBC Two’s landmark four-part series ‘Black and British: A Forgotten History’, written and presented by Historian David Olusoga OBE. Regularly collaborating on BBC projects, he completed the scores for the major three-part series ‘The Human Body: Secrets of Your Life Revealed’ and two-part series ‘Expedition Volcano’, both for BBC Two and PBS. Segun also scored the short comedy ‘Swan’ for Erebus Pictures.

His score for Shola Amoo’s short ‘Dear Mr Shakespeare’ received an Honourable Mention at the Jerry Goldsmith Awards. In addition, he’s written music for a project from Academy Award-winning American producers Shine Global: the 3D documentary ‘1 Way Up’. His work has screened at acclaimed festivals including Sundance, the London Film Festival, LA Film Festival, BlackStar Film Festival and many others.
