‘Frida’, the new ballet from choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa which features an original score by Peter Salem is currently being presented in Amsterdam by The Dutch National Ballet.

‘Frida’ was inspired by the life story of Frida Kahlo. One of the most intriguing artists of the twentieth century, the Mexican-born Kahlo refused to bow to misfortune, zealously fought taboos and championed women’s rights, and painted portraits that became famous the world over.

‘Accompanied by the beating, sometimes thunderous tones of an original score by Peter Salem – the ballet orchestra under the direction of conductor Matthew Rowe – Ochoa’s ballet is full of flavour and rich with metaphor.’ // ‘Peter Salem’s electronic score nicely amplified the burly city’s soundscape with sirens, whistles and cymbals. The music eventually morphed to something more placid, and differently timed.’ – Bachtrack
