David is a unique and inventive composer who has scored more than 100 film and television projects. From feature films, through animation, documentary and drama, he is just as comfortable writing a sweeping orchestral score as he is creating wild soundscapes on his ever-expanding modular synth setup. Being an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, David is always keen to bring real and organic elements into his scores.
Ever since he started composing, David has shown a high degree of musical eclecticism. As a teenager, he wrote an hour-long Requiem Mass for choir and orchestra (mostly during GSCE maths lessons!), while at the same time being the guitarist and songwriter in a pop band with a cult local following. While studying music at New College, Oxford and then at the National Film & Television School, David continued playing in bands and experimenting with music technology.
David’s latest credits include After Party (Season 2) with Daniel Pemberton, The Reluctant Traveler starring Eugene Levy for Apple TV+, Sanditon (Season 2 & 3) for Masterpiece/ITV, and Our Great National Parks for Netflix, which was narrated by Barack Obama. David’s music for Elizabeth: Unseen Queen received an Ivor Novello nomination in 2023 and his score for National Geographic’s 9/11: One Day in America was nominated at the Documentary Emmys for Outstanding Music Composition. He co-scored the Working Title film Emma and has written music for many recent drama series including The White Princess (with John Lunn), The Crown(with Martin Phipps), Victoria (with Ruth Barrett), and Vanity Fair (with Isobel Waller-Bridge).
His work on documentaries includes scores for BAFTA nominated Escape from Kabul (HBO), Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (Netflix), Four Hours at the Capitol (BBC/HBO) Wonders of Life (BBC), Inside North Korea’s Dynasty (National Geographic), Moon Landing Live (Channel 4), Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty (BBC) and the Netflix anthology series Bad Sport. He wrote additional music with Jocelyn Pook for Lauren Greenfield’s 2019 feature doc about Imelda Marcos, The Kingmaker.
David is also well known for his music for some of the most iconic animated shows of the last fifteen years (Charlie & Lola, Mike the Knight, Miffy, The Cat in the Hat, and Angry Birds) and has scored over 1,000 episodes of animation. His work on Charlie & Lola earned him an RTS award for Best Original Score (the only time a children’s series has won in the category), his title theme for The Cat in Hat Knows A Lot About That was nominated for an Emmy, and he was nominated for a BAFTA for his work on Aliens Love Underpants!
Under the moniker of In Analysis, and using his collection of vintage synthesizers, he has also released a concept album of songs about mothers, based on stories people have written in anonymously. His studio in South East London is packed full of unusual instruments and has the capacity to record soloists and small ensembles. David is a relative of the four-times Oscar-nominated composer, Friedrich Hollaender, most famous for writing Marlene Dietrich’s song, Falling in Love Again.
