David Schweitzer

David Schweitzer – Composer Profile

Possessing a unique and inventive way with composition and songwriting, David is an award-winning composer who has scored more than 100 film and television projects. These range from feature films, through animation, documentary and drama. He is just as comfortable writing a full orchestral score as he is creating wild soundscapes on his ever-expanding modular synth setup. Being an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, David is always keen to bring real and organic elements into his scores.

Ever since he started composing, David has shown a high degree of musical eclecticism. As a teenager, he wrote an hour-long Requiem Mass for choir and orchestra (mostly during GSCE maths lessons!), while at the same time being the guitarist and songwriter in a pop band with a cult local following. While studying music at New College, Oxford and then at the National Film & Television School, David continued playing in bands and experimenting with music technology.

Well known for his music for some of the most iconic animated shows of the last fifteen years (Charlie & Lola, Mike the Knight, Miffy, The Cat in the Hat, and Angry Birds), David has also scored a number of documentaries (including shows presented by Brian Cox, Andrew Marr and Jamie Oliver) as well as drama. Recent work has included writing music for The White Princess (with John Lunn), Victoria (with Ruth Barrett), and Vanity Fair (with Isobel Waller-Bridge). In 2018 he also scored a forthcoming National Geographic documentary series on the Kim Dynasty in North Korea, and wrote music for animated shows Digby Dragon, Aliens Love Underpants (for which he has been nominated for a BAFTA) and Olobob Top.

His work on Charlie & Lola earned him an RTS award for Best Original Score (the only time a children’s series has won in the category), and his title theme for The Cat in Hat Knows A Lot About That was nominated for an Emmy. David wrote scores for the feature films, Day of Wrath (a historical drama starring Christopher Lambert) and Silence Becomes You (a thriller starring Alicia Silverstone and Sienna Guillory) and Russell Howard’s film, A Gert Lush Christmas.

Under the moniker of In Analysis, and using his collection of vintage synthesizers, he has also released a concept album of songs about mothers, based on stories people have written in anonymously. His studio in South East London is packed full of unusual instruments and has the capacity to record soloists and small ensembles.
